Darpan Kabir

Darpan Kabir had become involved in journalism, as early as 1991, as soon as his formal education reached completion. And he quickly became an astute and distinguished journalist. However, he had another passion from the beginning of his childhood, which was poetry, and he quickly achieved prominence in that as well.

Gradually, his artistic footprints made their way to various genres of writing, and with his seamless effort and versatile writing style, he began to write rhythmic pieces, poems, stories and novels. He even added the title of being a lyricist into his identity by composing songs. At the 1991 Ekushey Book Fair, his first book of rhymes, “Dhapas”, was published. Soon after in 1995, his first story book for teens and young adults named “Bhorer Pakhi” followed. The first book of poetry, “Kashter Dharapat” was published in 2000. His first novel was “Swapnabilas” and it had managed to induce vibrance and enthusiasm during discussions at the 2005 Ekushey Book Fair.

Later in 2012, a CD of selected poetry recitations was released, which were taken from Darpan Kabir’s poetry book “Akash Aina”, and the poems were recited by Bhaswar Bandyopadhyay and Pragya Laboni. In 2017, a 20 poem recitation from the poetry book titled “Bosonto Noy Obohela” published from India as a CD. These poems were voiced by renowned actor and reciter Soumitra Bandopadhyay, and Madhumita Basu respectively. Previously, a CD titled “Nakshatrer Phul” was released in 2016 with songs written by Darpan Kabir, where the singers such as Sabina Yasmin, Subir Nandi, Syed Abdul Hadi and Shubhamita Banerjee from India were featured in various songs. Meanwhile, singers from West Bengal had sang songs written by Darpan Kabir, and some notables among them are Nachiketa Chakraborty, Srikanth Acharya, Shubhamita Banerjee, Raghav Chatterjee, Rupankar Bagchi, Lopamudra Mitra, Mekhla among others.

Darpan Kabir's philosophy

While juggling an impressive creative profession, Darpan Kabir also maintained a pristine reputation as a journalist. He initiated his career in journalism at the daily news “Aajker Kagoj” as the Narayanganj district correspondent, and then he joined the daily paper “Bhorer Kagoj” after moving to Dhaka. Soon after the following year he joined the daily “Banglabazar Patrika”. For professional purposes, he had traveled to various countries in Asia, America, Europe and Australia and in 2002, he had permanently settled in New York along with his family.

About Darpan Kabir's future

While living abroad, he remained actively involved in journalism. He was the founding editor of the weekly “Aajkal”, weekly “Bidesh Bangla'' and weekly “Deshkantha”, all newspapers published from New York. He was also the chief news editor of STV US, which happened to be Bangladesh's first satellite TV broadcast from New York. For a long period he was the news editor for the US branch of ATN Bangla. Currently, he is the editor of “Deshkantha” online news portal and also the founding general secretary of The America-Bangladesh Press Club.
